Academic Standing with Spring 2020 Pass/No Credit

Last updated on Apr 16, 2020

Students, especially those who are on Academic Probation, may wish to consider the following as they consider converting their courses to Pass/No Credit grading for spring 2020 semester:

Undergraduates

Student Handbook policies regarding Academic Progress and Academic Suspension & Dismissal: Undergrads remain in place for Spring 2020 with the following provisions for those who convert courses to Pass/No Credit grading:

  • Academic progress will be assessed through our usual processes.
  • Courses taken on a Pass/No Credit basis have no impact on the GPA, regardless of the outcome.

Because of these provisions, the following are true for students who take all (as opposed to none, one, or some) of their courses on a Pass/No Credit basis:

Students on academic probation

Students who had academic period (semester) and/or cumulative GPA(s) lower than 2.0 after their most recent semester and who are currently on probation will once again have academic period and/or cumulative GPA(s) lower than 2.0 if they take all of their courses on a Pass/No Credit basis.

As a consequence, they will be subject to dismissal and will be contacted in case they wish to make an appeal that can impact a final decision about their standing. At a minimum, they will be placed on probation for another term.

For this reason, students who are currently on academic probation may wish to think carefully before converting all of their courses to Pass/No Credit grading. Those with questions should consult their academic advisor.

Students who were reinstated

Students who were reinstated after being academically suspended or dismissed should pay very close attention to GPA requirements and the impact of converting all courses to Pass/No Credit grading, as the consequences for them can be especially significant. Those with questions should consult their academic advisor.

Students on academic probation who are receiving Financial Aid or Veterans Benefits

Students who are receiving Financial Aid or Veterans Benefits and who are currently on probation are encouraged to be particularly careful about the consequences that taking all of their courses on a Pass/No Credit basis can have on their ability to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress. Students should review Portal information first and then contact finaid@cca.edu or studentrecords@cca.edu (administrator of Veterans Benefits) respectively with specific questions.

Graduate students in Pass/No Credit programs

Student Handbook policies regarding Academic Progress for Graduate Students remain in place for Spring 2020 with the following provisions for those who convert letter-graded courses to Pass/No Credit grading:

  • Academic progress will be assessed through our usual processes.
  • Courses taken on a Pass/No Credit basis have no impact on the GPA, regardless of the outcome.
  • As a reminder, students in Pass/No Credit programs must both (a) Pass all their Pass/No Credit courses and (b) achieve academic period (semester) and cumulative GPAs of 2.66 in their letter-graded courses in order to avoid being subject to dismissal. Students who fail to meet either criteria will be contacted in case they wish to make an appeal that can impact a final decision about their standing. At a minimum, they will be placed on probation.
  • As another reminder, a single No Credit grade for students in Pass/No Credit programs can result in their being subject to dismissal. Such students will be contacted in case they wish to make an appeal that can impact a final decision about their standing. At a minimum, they will be placed on probation.
