Creative Citizens in Action (CCA@CCA) is looking for five students (or student groups) to create site specific and/or large-scale installation work for the main Nave during the CCA@CCA Fluid Mutualism Symposium (Feb 28–March 4, 2022). Selected artists may receive up to $500 each in materials and installation support. They will also receive professional documentation support.

The CCA@CCA Fluid Mutualism Symposium is a weeklong series of workshops, teach-ins and activations that dialogue with technologies and practices of Indigenous stewardship from across the world. The Symposium events fall under the theme of Fluid Mutualism, which explores how socio-political strategies intertwine with multi-generational and planetary networks of species and kin. Specifically, the events will focus on two pillars of Fluid Mutualism, Assembly and Communal Responsibility, as they relate to the manifestation of our collective (human and non-human) wellbeing and needs.

We are eager for installations to contemplate these ideas in unexpected ways. As an example, your work might contemplate ceremonial or political gatherings that center sovereignty in shared processes, and shared care for land and waters. See more on Fluid Mutualism, Assembly, and Communal Responsibility on the CCA@CCA portal homepage.

The CCA@CCA Fluid Mutualism Symposium will serve as an anchor point for the 2021-2022 Deborah and Kenneth Novack Creative Citizens Series, a year-long, intellectually rich conversation series that spans the disciplines of art, design, architecture, and writing.

SUBMISSION DETAILS

All CCA students are invited to submit proposals for site specific and/or large-scale installation work for the main Nave during the CCA@CCA Fluid Mutualism Symposium.

Approximately 3–5 installations will be selected and may be eligible for up to $500 each in materials and installation support. Work must address the theme of Fluid Mutualism, Assembly, and Communal Responsibility. Work may be freestanding, site-specific, or performative; if proposals are for performance work, the work should have a physical presence in the Nave throughout the Symposium week (i.e. props, sets, or other evidence of the performance must remain on view March 1–4). The project does not have to exist physically yet, but we do need to see a basic sketch, drawing, or rendering within your proposal. Collaborative and interdisciplinary projects that branch across majors and disciplines are encouraged. We understand that time and resources are limited right now, so just give us an idea of what you want to do! Applicants may be contacted for additional information during the course of the application review process in order to ensure feasibility and project success. Please read the FAQ before applying. Funds cannot be used to reimburse for work that has already been fabricated, but it is acceptable to apply for funds to enlarge or modify an existing work, project, or model. Students will be required to sign an exhibition agreement before obtaining funds, and must be available to attend install on February 28 and deinstall on March 4. For additional questions, please e-mail exhibitions@cca.edu.
